The concept of humility has significantly evolved over time. Once linked primarily to humiliation, it now embodies a powerful understanding of one's limitations and strengths. This change tells a compelling story about how society views both humility and assertiveness. In this blog post, we will examine this transformation, its impact on personal development, and how misinterpretations of assertiveness can lead to feelings of control.


The Historical Context of Humility


Historically, humility was often a response to humiliation. Many individuals, after experiencing humiliation, tried to deflect attention by downplaying their achievements. For example, in the Middle Ages, a knight returning home after a defeat might have expressed humility by refusing to wear his armor, signaling a need to atone for his perceived failures.


As we move through time, we see that humility was frequently associated with suffering. In religious texts, like those from the Bible, individuals often exhibit humility in times of trial. One notable instance is the biblical figure Job, who remained humble despite immense suffering, showing that humility came from trial and tribulation.


Historically, humility has been seen as a virtue, particularly in religious contexts. For instance, in Christianity, the figure of Jesus exemplified humility, especially during his trial before Pilate. Despite facing impending punishment, Jesus remained composed, and silent.

In this context, humility is not akin to submission; rather, it is a conscious choice to respond to adversity without succumbing to anger or aggression.


Today, however, society increasingly views humility as awareness with the biblical meaning changed from being a result of hardship, persecution from others, or dispostion resultant of personal failure. Research indicates that leaders who exhibit humility—74% of whom are perceived as trustworthy—tend to foster teams that are more engaged and less stressed. These leaders are described as having self-awareness, and recognition of their own strengths and weaknesses that impact the team. They seek others for the skills they don't have that are needed to obtain team success. This change in meaning of humility reflects a growing cultural appreciation for self-awareness and empathy, with nothing to do with the historical meaning of humility.


The twisted meaning is now used to quell individuals in leadership that display "too-much" assertion as arrogance. This abuse tactic is meant to cause an individual to internalize their anger, causing confusion, and demoralizing an indivudal into silence for recognizing anger as their sentry for signaling alarm during boundary violations. This abuse tactic is designed to create vulnerability.


The Changing Meaning of Humility


Modern interpretation of humility encourages individuals to embrace vulnerability, allowing humility to act as a springboard for personal growth.


However, a culture of control often emerges when society praises humility while labeling assertiveness as arrogance. When individuals feel pressured to respond to perceived insults with humility, they might suppress their genuine emotions. For instance, a survey found that around 60% of people feel they must hide their anger at work for fear of being misjudged. This suppression can create internal conflict, as ignoring emotions leads to anxiety, frustration, and burnout.


Recognizing this shift can empower individuals to navigate their emotions more effectively. Humility should accompany confidence, not replace it. By accepting one’s limitations without equating this acceptance with weakness, we can foster healthier interactions.


The Internal Conflict of Suppressed Anger


Anger is a natural emotion often signaling an injustice or unmet needs. When individuals do not express their anger constructively, issues can arise. If society pushes humility as the appropriate response to mispercieved assertion as arrogance, this can create a conflict that disrupts emotional wellbeing.


For example, when people internalize anger due to the fear of appearing arrogant, they miss opportunities for healthy boundary-setting. This internal struggle often presents itself as increased levels of anxiety or resentment, making it harder to distinguish between healthy assertion and excessive aggression.


In this light, humility can transform into a control mechanism. When society upholds humility as opposite from being viewed as arrogant during assertive resonse, individuals might feel pressured to downplay their emotions and success. This expectation can stifle honest communication and increase resentment towards others who express their assertiveness freely.


The Manipulation of Language and Meaning


Language profoundly influences our understanding of reality. The changing meanings of words often signal broader societal trends. The shift of humility from a symptom of humiliation to a celebrated trait reflects a cultural narrative that favors conformity over individual voice.


As language evolves, so do social norms. Characterizing humility as a virtue opposite to that of arrogance cultivates an environment that discourages personal assertiveness. This creates a society that promotes stability while minimizing decorum. A recent study found that companies with a culture that rewards humility see 31% less turnover, suggesting that this manipulation of meaning benefits those in leadership positions.


Moreover, creating a clear distinction between humility and arrogance can foster a stifling dynamic, compelling individuals to suppress their true selves. Recognizing this linguistic manipulation offers insight into countering these narratives and reclaiming emotional control.


Redefining Humility


The evolving understanding of humility highlights emotional complexities and social dynamics. As we balance humility, anger, and assertiveness, it becomes important to challenge the belief that humility is not the intended response to humiliation. This shift can unlock a better understanding of society and the narrative that keeps us on our knees begging for forgiveness, and pleading to have a voice.


When there are wolves in the room, it's important to regard them. Exercising vulnerability, will not put a stop to the plotting of dubious individuals. Insulting assertions as arrogance will be a first warning. Weakness and vulnerability will be tools of torchure, caused by one's own humility. Humility over any other attribute will be preferred during your feast, and will be considered stupidity from the perspective of the wolf, as disregard of one's sentry led to it.


By appreciating the historical journey of humility, we can ensure we maintain our emotional integrity. Moving forward, let us embrace the original meaning of humility, and consider what it feels like to be in the lion's den, and not let the word be used as weaponry, but as a foundational element of self-awareness and assertiveness on our personal and collective journeys.
